Variety reports that Edward Zwick, director of “Blood Diamond” and “The Last Samurai” is set to direct the film adaptation of Nathaniel Philbrick‘s book “In the Heart of the Sea.”
The book chronicles the saga of the Nantucket whaleship Essex which was sunk by a sperm whale in the Pacific in 1820. The 90 day ordeal at sea saw the initial survivors suffer through thirst, starvation, and cannibalism. At one point, they draw lots – the loser is shot in the head and his organs consumed. Only eight of the Essex’s crew survived.
The story of the Essex was Herman Melville’s inspiration for Moby Dick.

Edward Zwick (Don't fuck it up, Zwick. We're counting on you...)
