Today’s Dachshund (6/16/09) – A Hot Dog Wiener Dog Combo Haiku (video)

Somebody somewhere had a hot dog haiku contest recently. The winner managed to deftly combined hot dogs and wiener dogs, literally…see video above. As far as I can tell, the haiku goes as follows

One wiener with fur
One wiener with chili cloak(?)
The two become one

Today’s Dacshund (6/14/09) – More on “Killer” The Wiener Dog, Shot Dead By The Police

Coverage of Killer’s untimely death continues in the local and national media as outraged citizens and commentators continue to sound off. The video clip above, from a local news station, contains graphic imagery – Killer’s dried blood on the steps of the family home and Killer’s former collar, now hung outside on a lamppost.

Mike Williams, of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, has written a column and posted a video blog called “Danville officer was dead wrong to kill dachshund.” In his column, Williams references the fact that Danville police have had problems with dog shootings in the recent past, and he expresses concern over the Danville PD’s misinformation about the case, sayng

The department’s news release made the dachshund sound like the second coming of Cujo, the rabid St. Bernard from Stephen King’s horror novel. The release said the dog could have been rabid. (He wasn’t.) “The investigation revealed the dog was named ‘Killer.’” (In the way a bald guy is called “Curly.”) The dog had displayed aggressive tendencies before to others. (Neighbors described him as gentle.)

It appears that the Danville police have every intention of continuing to try to justify the shooting, and it appears that the man who shot Killer, Murrill McLean, has no intention of apologizing.

Today’s Dacshund (6/12/06) – Remebering “Killer.” Shot By The Police, A Wiener Dog Whose Time Came Too Soon (video)

(UPDATE: The officer who shot Killer has been identified: Murrill McLean, 43, of Danville.)

The outrage continues over the death of Killer, a Danville, Va. wiener dog who was gunned down by the police earlier in the week.

Message boards and the blogosphere are afire with questions and condemnation.

GoDanRiver.com has posted a series of letters and emails to its editor. People are not happy. A few samples:

“The police shooting of miniature dachshund was a senseless killing. A small, growling dog running through the yard — do you not have a large foot? Are you able to use any of your other options (pepper spray, Taser or baton)?…”

“I have the type of job that requires me to go to people’s houses every day.
It is rare that a day goes by that I am not approached by a barking, territorial dog. Sometimes they catch me out in the yard as was the case here.

I have yet to be bitten. Why? Because I use options…like stopping, voice, and feet. A small dog will respond to a lifted foot to block his approach. Worse case scenario would be a slight kick to stop a potential ankle bite…however, never had to kick a dog either.
This was abuse of power & policy. It wasn’t a large dog. There is no real threat….”

In the video clip at the top of the post, several of Killer’s friends – both canine and human – are featured, and it’s clear his neighborhood will be slow to recover from the shocking loss of the little wiener dog. Says one woman, “He’s in the arms of the angels now…” (Note: I give you about a 1 in 10 chance of actually getting that video to play.)

And, finally, there’s disturbing, but unsurprising news, describing the cop’s attitude as both cavalier and confrontational. According to Killer’s owner Tawaiian Harper, Killer lay there “with his guts hanging out” as Officer McLean leaned against this police car smoking a cigarette. When Harper asked McLean for his name and badge number, McLean refused.

Today’s Dachshund (6/11/09) – R.I.P. Killer: A Wiener Dog Victim Of Police Brutality?

Killer was gunned down in the road by a Danville, Va. police officer (Richmond Times Dispatch)

Killer was gunned down in the road by a Danville, Va. police officer (Richmond Times Dispatch)

Shocking and disturbing news today from the United States, where, Killer, an 11 year-old miniature dachshund, died after being gunned down in the street by a Danville, Virginia police officer.

According to Police Chief Philip Broadfoot, the unnamed officer who pulled the trigger was serving warrants to Killer’s neighbors when he “was surprised by a growling dog running through the yard directly at him from the rear, leaving him with just seconds to consider his options.”

Broadfoot went on to add that those options included distracting the dog, using a baton, pepper spray, or, of course, a sidearm.

Apparently common sense is not an option available to Danville police officers. It’s an 11 year-old miniature wiener dog attacking a grown man police officer! Just grab it by the back of the neck perhaps.

According to neighbors, Killer was a mild-mannered house dog. “He just kind of walked up and down the neighborhood and didn’t bother anybody,” said one neighbor.

The officer and his supervisor both expressed remorse over the death, but that won’t bring killer back.

When Killer’s owner, Tawaiin Harper, was asked if he’d consider getting another dog, he replied, “You can’t replace Killer. He’s one of a kind. I’m still trying to soak it in because the dog had been with us so long. He was a family member. They took a family member away.”

Today’s Dachshund (6/10/09) – I’ve Got Mixed Feelings About This Wiener Dog Wearing Booties Video (video)

Above is a video in which a wiener dog has been forced by someone attired in some sort of traditional or indigenous garb to wear booties. At first, it’s easy to mistake the wiener dog’s frantic tail wagging as a sign of happiness. But it soon becomes clear that the wiener dog is actually trying to propel itself forward, to no avail, with the inadequate momentum generated by it’s back half.

But then when the wiener dog gives up and actually start walking in the booties…high-larious!

Today’s Wiener Dog (6/909) – Sharon and Meredith’s 6th Annual Wine and Wiener Party (video)

I planned on being even lazier than usual about updating tonite because I had to go to a party after work. So I thought, -I’ll just throw up any old video of a “wiener dog party,” but Sharon and Meredith’s 6th Annual Wine and Wiener Party is an epic 9+ minute documentary that deserves WAY more the 465 views it’s gotten on youtube. I can’t do a rundown, but here are some of the highlights

  • The opening score is a version of “The Beverly Hillbillies” theme song, but it’s not the version you might be familiar with.
  • The woman who MC’s the costume contest uses her way-too-authoritarian when announcing the eight finalists. “We need the Oscar Mayer wiener dog.” Yeah…we get it.
  • There’s a wiener dog in this video that’s supposed to look like Johnny Depp.
  • Then the un-ironic MC open mouth kisses the Johnny Depp wiener dog.
  • 4:48 – wiener dog drinking from a fountain
  • You see lots of wiener dogs, but very little wine
  • A “Wiener Dogs Bobbing For Wieners Contest”
  • 7:05 – Wienie Race false start…hilarious
  • The whole thing just has a weird vibe to it…like it could be a DVD outtake from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (see couple at 8:43)

Apparently, the people at FreakingNews.com don’t think wiener dogs are funny enough already, so they had a wiener dog photoshop contest.
